Why toothpaste?
It is funny the things that make a lasting impression, that stick to the side of your brain where all the important memories are kept. One such memory is “I want to be your toothpaste.” It popped into my head during a marketing course where we were comparing products that needed to be constantly promoted to those that were less frequently marketed but still very successful and why this was so. Highly promoted products were ones where yesterday’s success did not ensure tomorrow’s. There was little brand loyalty and therefore consumers need to be reminded with consistent messages or else they wander off to other products.
Some products however enjoyed a particularly nice niche. They did not need to be greatly marketed, as their consumers were intensely loyal ones; consumers who would happily go from shop to shop until they found what they wanted. These products were close personal friends, something the customer would not do without. Products like toothpaste. I want my clients to think of me as they do their toothpaste – close bonded trusted relationship where simply no other consultant will do.
